1. "Hangmen Also Die", Fritz Lang, 1943 - The Classical Music Guide Forums

Another magnificent restoration!! This (very long) film was directed by Fritz Lang, with cinematography by James Wong Howe and co-written by Berthold Brecht and Lang. That's quite a pedigree. It is sometimes described as "war noir", but it's essentially a thriller set in WW2 Czechoslovakia and surrounds the assassination of the brute Reinhard Heydrich. Before the facts came to light over who killed "The Hangman", as Heidrich was identified by the Czech people, the film speculates about the role of the underground and it's a nail-biter from start to finish. Taut, clean direction with a "noir" appearance, "Hangmen Also Dies" services two purposes, apart from its primary function as entertainment; propaganda for the allies in WW2 - the call to patriotism - but, more importantly, dramatizing the appalling suffering inflicted on the people by the vicious murderous thugs which were the Gestapo, on behalf of the Nazis.
